DEVIL'S CLAW


 
 











Part used: root.
Properties: lithotriptic, discutient, alternative, stimulant.
What it affect: liver, kidneys, stomach and joints.

Preparation and amount:
Infusion: steep 30 mins. 1-2 cups a day.
Dedoction: simmer 15 min and take 6 oz. 3x a day.
Tincture: ½-1 tsp. 3x a day.
Powder: take 2-3 #0 capsules (15-30 grains) 3x a day.

Purposes:
Internally, devils claw is primarily used for rheumatism, lumbago, gout, and arthritis. It is a blood cleanser which removes deposits in the joints and aids in eliminations= of uric from the body. It reduces inflammation and relieves pain. Acting as a diuretic, sedative and digestive stimulant, it is good for allergies, gallbladder, liver, arteriosclerosis , kidneys, and menopausal symptoms.

Devil's claw does not have an odor, but it contains substances that make it taste bitter. It is a leafy perennial with branching roots and shoots. It has secondary roots, called tubers, that grow out of the main roots. The roots and tubers are used for medicinal purposes.
Harpagophytum procumbens, also called grapple plant, wood spider and most commonly Devil's Claw, is a plant of the sesame family, native to South Africa.
The botanical name, Harpagophytum, means “hook plant” in Greek
